Daniel Ek - Chief Executive Officer

Learn about Spotify's innovative CEO

Daniel Ek is the CEO of Spotify Technologies S.A., one of the most popular music streaming services today. Ek co-founded Spotify in 2008 to provide people with the ability to access music online without having to download it. His business model encourages people to stream music rather than pirate it and offers them an affordable alternative to purchasing music.

Ek has been Spotify’s primary shareholder since 2008. Despite initial backlash from both consumers and artists, Spotify has amassed over 11 million creators and 433 million users as of 2022. Ek’s goal for the service is now to enable artists to thrive from their work. Ek has emphasized the importance of being transparent with Spotify’s generation of revenue for the music industry.

Before developing Spotify, Ek held a senior position in the Nordic auction company Tradera and served as Chief Technology Officer of Stardoll. Ek’s entrepreneurial efforts began when he created Advertigo, an online advertising company. Advertigo was acquired by Tradedoubler in 2005. The sale of Advertigo allowed Ek to retire. Soon after, Ek, along with Martin Lorentzon, created Spotify, which has developed into the multi-billion-dollar company it is today.
